Day 197 – In Search of Wildflowers

We had heard about a field of wildflowers that were blooming about an hour out-of-town. We’d been told that there were thousands, if not millions, of wildflowers there.  So last night hubby suggested we leave early this morning so we could photograph the flowers in the early morning light.

That sounded like a good idea.  I didn’t know he meant getting up at 3:45 a.m.  But we did and we were out the door at 4:08 a.m.  Since there was no one on the road except us and the deer, we made good time.

We were told to take the Echo Creek trailhead road on Highway 20 toward Albany, Oregon.  We turned onto a very narrow dirt road going up the side of a mountain.  The forest is beautiful old growth pine that has been fortunate enough to not have been affected by wild fires.  The sign said it was two miles to the trailhead but we were told that the wildflowers were in a meadow along the road to the trailhead.  The farther we drove, the worse the road became until we got to a section where the road was almost completely washed away.  At that point we decided that my little car might not make it through.  As I said, the road was very narrow and there was a steep drop on one side.  With a number of small back and forth maneuvers, we got the car turned around and headed back.

We didn’t want to have made the trip for nothing so we took a couple of other roads that looked like they were in better condition.

There was a light fog hanging over the mountains and occasionally the sun would peek through and the clouds had a nice pink glow to them.

We didn’t see our field of wildflowers on this trip, but we will keep searching.

  1. There’s always something to photograph and make the effort worthwhile.

I really like the shot of the flowing water . . . and I hope that was not the road.
