The first two nights of our walking trip in Scotland were spent at the quaint fishing village of Ullapool.

Ullapool is a small village with a population of about 1300 people. I felt right at home as I grew up in a small lake town with a population of about 1200.

But don’t let the size of the town fool you – there is plenty to do. Lots of hiking areas, fishing, bicycling and the town has numerous restaurants, bars, cafes, and a museum.

Our hiking day took us along a beautiful pathway down to the ocean. Who knew there were gorgeous sandy beaches in Scotland.

Our walk was about 5-6 hours and the scenery was spectacular.

I tasted my first (and last) haggis in Ullapool. While it wasn’t terrible, it’s probably not something I would order again. But when I’m traveling, I want to eat the local cuisine . . . or at least try it.

I would love to go back to this area of Scotland and spend more time. It is a beautiful place.

Wow I’m so glad you are sharing this trip with us… beautiful place…
Thanks, Rob. It really is a beautiful country.
Thanks for sharing these beautiful images Maralee. Looks like most of the Ullapool remains to untainted bof industrialization.
Most of the small villages seem to be untouched. There seems to be a simple and natural way of life. I think that’s why I liked it there so much. No pretense. Just a lovely place with lovely people.
Are your sisters living there? What brought you to this particular town? It is really beautiful. It must have been hard to put your camera down…
No, I don’t have any family there. I went with my sisters and nieces on a walking tour of Scotland and this happened to be one of the places we stayed. It is an extraordinarily beautiful place.
It looks beautiful…
These are gorgeous. I can’t imagine how much nicer it must have been in person.
It is hard to describe how beautiful it is. I loved every minute of it.
You should watch the movie “Local Hero” (if you haven’t).
I have seen Local Hero. Loved the movie.
Beautiful!
Thank you, Lilly.
Such beautiful photos, thanks for sharing them today!
Thank you very much.
Surely everyone knows about the fabulous sandy beaches of the west coast of Scotland. There’s some lovely sandy beaches on the east coast too but the scenery isn’t so spectacular. If you get some nice weather, it is a heartstoppingly beautiful place and I am glad that you found it. You have taken some very nice pictures which do it justice..
I was surprised by the nice, white sandy beaches. In my mind I had expected it to be all rocky shores. I was pleasantly surprised. It was unusual because while we were there we had mostly blues skies and sunshine and London was having torrential rains. We were fortunate.
What a place to go out for a walk. And you are right, skip haggis, next time. 😛
It is a fantastic place to go on a walkabout. While I didn’t hate the haggis, I didn’t like them enough to order them again. 🙂
Beautiful photos. I rather liked the haggis when I visited Scotland. 😉
Thank you. My niece actually liked the haggis, too. It’s all a matter of taste . . . literally. 🙂
Beautiful photos and memories for you.
Thanks, Judy. It was a wonderful time and especially more wonderful to spend it with family.
Spectacular views, Maralee! Gorgeous.
