I almost missed the full moon tonight. The two moon charts I refer to said the moon would rise at 8:28 or 8:30. So as I’m driving up Pilot Butte at 8:20, I see the moon has already risen and is above the horizon. I drove as quickly as I could on the narrow, busy road and arrived in time to get a few shots before it got too high.
According to The Farmer’s Almanac, the August moon is called the Full Sturgeon Moon:
The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.
When I turned around to look behind me, the sun had set and there was a beautiful glow over the mountains. I had to take a photo of this gorgeous evening.

Beautiful photos.
Thanks, Judy.
I love moon shots. I have a hard time photographing them so I appreciate more photos of others, like yours, which are beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!
Thanks, Francine. I’ve learned that I have to spot meter on the moon if I want to get any detail in the moon. Especially as it gets higher in the sky and the sky gets darker.
How lovely these shot are… absolutely lovely…
Thank you, John.
Maralee, from struggling with the moon … you have come up with up with some wonderful art lately – my favorite is without any doubt the shot with the moon and the tree. Wonderful frame to one of the most wonderful subjects.
Thanks, Viveka. I take photos from Pilot Butte quite often and I’ve always loved the character of this particular tree. I was fortunate that the moon was rising in the right spot this month. 🙂
It’s such a wonderful photo …. you have really catch the moon now.
Beautiful shots. Makes me miss Oregon.
This time of year is my favorite time of year. No rain, blue skies, warm (not too hot). Just can’t beat it. Although it’s supposed to get hot this weekend.
I love the moon and tree photo. Was that done with only natural light, or did you use any kind of fill? It’s absolutely gorgeous?
There should not be a question mark after “gorgeous.”
Stunning, Maralee!
I did a little editing in NIK Software to bring a little highlight to the tree so it wouldn’t be too dark. But it was one of those evenings with a little haze in the sky that produced the most beautiful colors. It was a gorgeous evening.
I was laughing at Carissa’s remark and somehow my comment ended up there. That’s ok, I’ll say it again – stunning, Maralee!
Thanks, Susan. Have a wonderful weekend.
What a lovely series of of photo
Thank you, AJ.
