We have a family of rock chucks, aka yellow-bellied marmots, aka whistling pigs, who live in a field behind our office. I haven’t seen them for a while, but today they came out to eat. They look as if they’re mowing the lawn – head down in the grass, grazing forward.

It appears we have 2 adults and 4 babies. They’re pretty skittish and I had to take the photos through a window and crop them. When they were here this morning, the whole family was there. But when I went to get my camera, the noise frightened them away. This afternoon I was ready, but only the babies came out to graze.

These critters were constantly moving so it was hard to get sharp focus.

Cute little one.
BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!
They are pretty cute. And fast.
so sweet.
They are pretty sweet when they’re young like these are.
Almost squirrel like, don’t get these here by us, but they look like a fascinating subject to photo.
They look a little like a squirrel but they’re a bit rounder. They seem to like eating grass.
They are so cute! 🙂
Looks like a squirrel… Lovely one and you captured so nicely dear Maralee, Thank you, with my love, nia
Thanks, Nia. These were the babies. The adults are a bit bigger and don’t look so much like squirrels. They’re rounder and much larger.
Maralee, you have a mini zoo there in your back yard …. very cute – I suppose they are very flexiable those things. You did a good job anyhow.
We’re out in the middle of the wilderness so we always have animals wandering through. There have even been cougars in town at times.
Do you mean the 4 leged ones ????
Yes. We have to keep our small animals indoors when we’re not home. I’ve never seen a cougar, but they’ve been sighted only a couple of miles from my home in a busy residential area.
AAAAW these are cute! fantastic photos Maralee
Thanks, Joanna.
Strange (unknown) and very sweet animals.
He is a cute little fellow.
They are pretty cute. In some areas of town where there are a lot of rocks, we can see a dozen or so at a time out eating the grass.
Those natural lawnmowers are some of the best — efficient, no nasty exhaust smoke…….. lol
