I’m still enjoying watching the hummingbirds at my feeder. I haven’t been able to photograph two of the fighting yet, but I have about another month before they head south for the winter.
I’ll keep trying.

As an aside, if you’re interested in entering The Digital Lightroom’s monthly photo contest, go to their blog site here. This month’s topic is “lead in lines.”

Hi Maralee.. What lens did you use to capture these image’s? These are beautiful!
I have a 55-300mm zoom lens. These are taken close to 300mm. I’d really like to get a 400 or 500mm lens so I could get even more photos, but they’re outside my budget at the moment. 🙂
Well you and the 55-300mm did a fantastic job capturing these images!
Hi Maralee! I love these pictures of the hummingbird. You captured all the details like the turquoise feathers on its wings. I used to have a hummingbird feeder and I got to witness the fighting. It amazed me that such dainty animals could be so mean.
Thank you so much. I had three hummingbirds fighting yesterday but they were so fast I didn’t get any images of them. They are fierce little creatures.
I had a new guy by my feeder. I will need to do some research on him. He has some of the green reflected on the back, but the head and side feathers were black. And his gorget was really dark in and out of the light.
Sounds like it would be interesting to see. We have the same ones coming to our feeder. We’re still not having the numbers we had last year.
Wonderful images, once again. That fellow really does like to stick out his tongue!
Thanks, Carissa. He does stick out his tongue a lot, doesn’t he. 🙂
Nice! Our pack is still here and they are so fun to watch. Very challenging to get them fighting. I’m going to work on that this week too before they leave.
Thanks. As I was watching them on Sunday I noticed one would come down and feed and then go to the top of a nearby tree and just sit there. As soon as another hummingbird would come to the feeder, the one in the tree would dive down and attach the one at the feeder. This happened over and over. Very interesting dynamic between the birds.
We have a couple dominant birds and then the rest seem to take turns at the feeders. I put flowers out today and enjoyed watching them all rotate around the blooms. They are better than TV!
What kind of flowers do you plant to attract the hummingbirds? Mine just go to the feeder – I don’t see them at the flowers at all.
