When I was down by the river this weekend, I saw these strange-looking birds. I thought they were black ducks. I searched the internet for black ducks with white bill and lo and behold . . . they’re coots.

Yep, we’ve got’em too! I was perplexed until I figured it out. Funny looking, aren’t they?
I had to Google it to find out what it was. I just thought it was a black duck with white bill. 🙂

I love these. I tried hard to get a good shot of one last year, but couldn’t get it to come close enough. They are relatively rare here and basically just pass through.
Thanks, Christine. I hadn’t seen them before, although I hadn’t been to that particular park to spend much time until this year. They are unusual.
