Day 228 – Silhouettes

We have several wildfires burning both south and north of us.  They are far enough away to be out of danger for us, but close enough to give us smokey, hazy skies.  The smoke makes for some beautiful sunrise and sunset shots.  On our walk this evening I decided to try take some silhouette shots using the colorful skies as my background.

I set my exposure based on the sky which made the foreground subjects black and created the silhouette.

I’m not a fan of power lines, but I liked the lines of these power lines against the color of the sky.

  1. These are incredibly striking. It’s sad that they come at the expense of so much destruction, but they are beautiful to look at. I even like the one with power lines!

    1. We get wildfires every year and some years are worse than others. So far this hasn’t been a bad year, but thunderstorms are expected this weekend and it’s extremely dry right now. We can only hope we don’t have more fires.

  2. The sky on fire – sad that it’s sad news behind the beauty … wonderful – you’re really playing around and catching the most remarkable subjects. The last .. goes on my pick list.

      1. Terrible … thinking of all the wild animals and birds, so sad … and then all people that loses their homes. Every years there is fires in US, South of Europe and Australia. A good rain would solve everything.

  3. The skies are beautiful at sunset whenever there’s a fire. But I feel awfully weird “liking” something that brings destruction and, sometimes, death. I hate powerlines and basically anything in nature that mars the landscape. But those shots of yours just work.

    1. Thank you. We had a fire erupt close to us Friday night (about 8 miles) but they got it under control pretty quickly. The weather cooperated and it was going away from any buildings. But it’s still hot and dry so wildfires are still a threat.

  4. All your photos are beautiful. The colors and compositions are very nice.

I used to hate having power lines and such in my photos, but I attended the Altered Landscape exhibit last springs at the Nevada Museum of Art and realized that just about every place on earth where humans exist has been altered in some way, so I’ve learned to try to incorporate rather than rail against it.

We finally have clear skies today. No clouds. No smoke. But the Truckee River was mud brown yesterday. I hope the run-off has made its way through and we are back to clear waters today.

      1. Thank you for directing me to the Altered Landscape page. I looks like it would have been a very interesting exhibit. There is beauty in just about everything . . . although I still think the recliner in the water is wrong. 🙂
