Although the eared grebe is the most abundant grebe in the world, I had never seen one before. The breeding adult has golden feathers that fan out behind their bright red eye. In the fall, in the United States, the entire population of eared grebes flies to Mono Lake, California or Great Salt Lake, Utah where they will double their weight eating brine shrimp and alkali flies before migrating farther south.
Maralee
Known as the black-necked grebe in the UK.
Wonderful captures, Maralee, and what a snazzy red eye!
