Geese and Muskrat

Maralee_Park_130303_43578-EditI was down at the river again last weekend to watch the ducks and geese and the occasional eagle fly by.  It was a gorgeous day and just nice to watch the activity on the river.

Maralee_Park_130303_43547-EditWhile I was standing on the dock, this otter (at least I think that’s what it is) swam up with a  mouthful of brush.  He went under the dock and stayed there for a while before swimming off for the next load.  He must be building his home under the dock.

Maralee_Park_130303_43528-EditThis weekend is supposed to be another gorgeous spring-like weekend, so I may have to go back and see what other creatures I can find.

  1. They are so lovely…. The first one photographically fascinated me, amazing shot and the lovely little otter too! Thank you dear Maralee, love, nia

    1. This has been a very unusual winter for us. In the 12 years that I’ve lived here, this year was the least amount of snow we’ve gotten. We haven’t had a significant snowfall since December and even then it didn’t last long. The forecast for the next 10 days is for temperatures in the 50’s and 60’s.

  2. I like the photos, but I hate to break this to you, the “otter” is really a muskrat. The face of an otter is much more canine looking. Muskrats are under appreciated critters in the rodent family. Both usually live in burrows along the shores of lakes and rivers, so it is very easy to confuse them.

    1. Thank you for clarifying that for me. I wasn’t sure what it was. I asked someone at the dock and they said it was something that started with an “N”. Apparently he was 1 letter off. 🙂 I’m learning a lot from other on this blog about creatures in the wild.

      1. As a relative new follower of your blog, I wasn’t sure if I should point that out or not, I hope that you weren’t offended. I’ve been learning so much from other bloggers that it has made me realize that even though I have spent much more time than the average person out doors, that there are still volumes for me yet to learn.

    2. I absolutely appreciate it. It helps me learn about the outdoor critters. 🙂 I’ve only recently begun photographing animals and birds and I know very little about many of the creatures of the wild. So I very much appreciate it.

  3. These are great photos.. and the colours and activity tells me spring is trying to raise it’s head… love the Muskrat… something we don’t get here…
