Day 273 – Full Harvest Moon

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the September full moon is known as the Full Corn Moon or Full Harvest Moon

• Full Corn Moon or Full Harvest Moon – September This full moon’s name is attributed to Native Americans because it marked when corn was supposed to be harvested. Most often, the September full moon is actually the Harvest Moon, which is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. In two years out of three, the Harvest Moon comes in September, but in some years it occurs in October. At the peak of harvest, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this Moon. Usually the full Moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the Moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S., and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans, and wild rice the chief Indian staples are now ready for gathering.

  1. I photographed it last night too. I couldn’t figure out how to get the detail I was seeing in the moon and the surrounding landscape at the same time. I see that you managed that quite nicely. I have so much to learn.

    1. These were taken before it was too dark. The sun had just set about 10 minutes before so there was still enough light in the sky. I metered on the moon to get the detail of the moon. The surrounding area was actually lighter than it shows in the photo. When I metered on the moon, that was the brightest objects and everything else became darker.

  2. Maralee, once again you have picked down the moon for me … Stunning job. My favorite is without any doubt the middle one … with the roughness from the factory and softness from the moon. The last photo brilliant too – but you are world champion on reflections.

I'd love to hear from you
