Day 208 – Critters

Tonight was another attempt to photograph the hummingbirds who have been frequenting our feeder.  They must know that I’m there because they either don’t show up, or if they do, the leave quickly.  But I did get one shot of a hummingbird.

While I was sitting there waiting, I saw a family of quail in our driveway.  I moved to get closer and they scattered, but after standing there for just a few minutes, they gathered together again.  The babies are getting pretty big.

The little kitty cat started walking up our sidewalk, but stopped when it saw me.  It posed for a few moments and then turned and walked away.

  1. Nice photos. We used to have hummingbirds that came every year, and then we had one incredibly brutal winter and we never saw them again. Maybe we’ll try again next year, but I haven’t seen hummingbirds around our place for awhile now. Quail we have in abundance though, and I totally understand the challenge they post to photographers! I can’t seem to get any decent shots of them.

  2. How delicious the hummingbird is – we nearly run over a whole quail family outside my friends house in Victoria – but the chicks where so much smaller and plenty of them. See here on your photo that they get many. We counted to 9 … and she where in the middle of the road with them. So cute. Funny looking birds .. with the hairstyle. The cat looks a bit uncomfortable. Great shots.

      1. I think I had 3 nights since I went to bed last afternoon … still a bit out of this world. *smile Laundry in a hours time .. that will wake my up.

  3. Speaking of quail chicks, one day I was walking the grounds at work and saw two quail (pair bond, it appears), nervously flitting back and forth on the path in front of me. When they finally determined that the coast was clear, their entire clutch of down-covered chicks went running across the path. I’d never seen such tiny quail chicks, so they had to be, at most, a couple of days old. I wasn’t fast enough with my camera to capture them and am still kicking myself over that missed opportunity.

    1. These quail chicks seemed to be a little older. We usually have a couple of quail families walking through our yard. One year I counted 24 chicks in one bunch. I think it was a blended family or something. They are awfully cute.

    1. Thanks, Christine. Last night the quail families were in the back yard with the momma and baby deer. I would have like to take a photo but I didn’t want to spook the deer and we have a railing that would get in the way unless I actually went out there.
