Black Rhino

We had just one black rhino sighting while we were in Africa. In the mid-1900’s, black rhinos were plentiful.  In the 1960’s settlers killed off a large number of the rhino population. By 1970, there were an estimated 65,000 black rhinos that could be found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. But in eastern Africa, 90 percent of them were killed by poachers. At one point there were fewer than 2,500 left, in pockets in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia, and Tanzania. Due to anti-poaching efforts, the black rhino population is starting to recover and there are now an estimated 5,000 black rhinos left.
