I just returned from a trip back to Minnesota to spend time with my sisters. We took a short drive through the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. I was hoping to see some sandhill cranes. While I did see a few sandhill cranes (I will post them another day), my biggest surprise was seeing all of the American White Pelicans. There were flocks of big white birds flying and I initially thought they were great egrets. But upon closer inspection, it turned out they were pelicans.

For such big birds the pelicans are still quite graceful on the wing – reminds me of a 747!
What a treat to see! Nice to have a good surprise after the disappointing crane showing.
