This is a poor photograph of this bird, but I had about 10 seconds to get my camera, point and shoot. Through a dirty window no less. But I’ve never seen this bird at my feeder before. I believe it is a woodpecker but I don’t know what type. Any ideas?
I wish it would come back and spend a little more time.
Maralee
First thought was a Downie of Hairy Woodpecker Maralee but looking around I believe it is a Red Headed Woodpecker.
I thought that at first but the body markings are different and their range doesn’t come near here. Now I’m thinking it’s a red-breasted sapsucker.
Red headed sapsucker also called a yellow bellied sapsucker.
I searched on my Audubon app and I’m thinking it’s a red-breasted sapsucker. The range of the yellow-bellied sapsucker doesn’t cover our area from what the app shows.
Yes, I think you’re 100% right on that, Maralee.
Wow
If you hadn’t mentioned the dirty window, we’d never have known. Whatever it is, I haven’t ever seen one down under š
