Did you know that there are 23 species of chipmunk? The Least Chipmunk (Tamias minimus) is the smallest North American chipmunk. Its size ranges from 8″ to 12″. That size must include the tail because these guys are really little.
It has three black with white stripes between them on their face and five on their back. They do not hibernate, but do go into the state of “torpor”.

That tail looks so long for such a little thing! I had absolutely no idea there were so many species.
I think I’d have a difficult time trying to identify all the different species.
Cute!
Thanks, Judy.
Fascinating post, Marilee. Are these guys a pest, or welcome?
They’re not a pest to me. I love having them around.
Not like our possums then – they prefer our roses and parsley, even though there are plenty of native plants for them 😉
