Some thirty years ago, when I lived in Hawaii, I was a member of an outrigger canoe racing team.

I had the second position in the canoe and was responsible for calling the cadence.

My husband, who paddled for a canoe club of mostly police officers, organized our all women’s team and coached us.

We had a very successful season – we won all of our races except one.

On that one we were disqualified at the start because our canoe’s ama (the floating arm that sticks out in the water) got caught by another team’s canoe and we flipped over.  We weren’t able to right the canoe and get situated before the starter’s gun went off.

Here we are – I’m fourth from the right.

But it was a lot of fun and gave me  lot of wonderful memories.

  1. You are tall like Uncle Wesley. What beautiful photos and memories. It looks like a lot of fun. You still look wonderful 30 years later!
