It was a gorgeous, but chilly, day here yesterday. It was my first walk along the river in a while and it was beautiful. Just as I was finishing my walk, I noticed a couple of killdeer near a pond. They were a fair distance away so theses photos are highly cropped.

I know we live in different continents and I am always intrigued by different names for familiar birds. We have three very similar birds. One is called the Ringed Plover, another Little Ringed Plover and much rarer the Kentish Plover. Killdeer seems an over aggressive title for a small bird that just loves the shore of sea and estuary bobbing along the tideline looking for food. 🙂
I agree – I think killdeer is a harsh name for such a cute little bird. I don’t know what they ever did to a deer to deserve that name. 🙂
