I was walking on my lunch hour along the Deschutes River when I noticed this bird on a branch across the river. (Of course, it had to be across the river.) As I got a little closer I saw that it was a kingfisher. This is only the second time in the 15 years I’ve lived here that I have seen a kingfisher. I got a little closer and was able to take a couple of shots of it from different angles. It was still a fair distance away and even with my 300mm lens, it was pretty small. These photos are cropped quite a bit. I tried to get closer but as soon as I did, it flew off. I hope I see it again.

I am green with envy. I have never seen a kingfisher perching.
Lovely! I’ve never had a kingfisher stay still that long for me! Even at a distance.
Ive only seen a kingfisher in real time twice, each in a February, perched on an electric line, high above the water. A really cool bird to see. Love your picture!
Wonderful shots, so lucky to capture before he took flight! Well done!
I spotted one fishing just this morning an inlet by the bay in SF. They are beautiful and so are your images, Maralee.
