I think this is the same heron that I photographed last year along the Deschutes River. And it is one smart heron. It seems that no matter what side of the river I’m walking on, the heron is on the other side. So even with my 300mm lens, it was still a fair distance away.

In my experience Herons can be hard to sneak up on. The best shots I’ve gotten were in the kayak. Apparently it appears less threatening when someone is floating by. Then again it could be that some are simply more habituated to people. Great shots nevertheless!
I will have to learn how to kayak and get out on some of the lakes and rivers. 🙂
Aside from the great photo ops, kayaking is a whole lot of fun!
You got good shots though.
Thanks so much. I’ve been stalking this bird for a couple of years now and I think he’s on to me and has learned to avoid me. 🙂
