White-crowned Sparrow

Maralee_Park_140420_62485-EditI believe this is a mountain chickadee white-crowned sparrow.  If I’m incorrect, I hope someone will correct me.

Maralee_Park_140420_62469-EditI think these little birds have such amazing personalities.  You can almost see what’s going on in their little birds brains.  And after watching a NOVA segment about birds, I will consider it a compliment if someone calls me a “bird brain.”

  1. Sparrows are especially difficult as there are so many different ones that look very similar.

However, once you start looking you get a pretty good idea how to spot the differences.

I have three different bird books, and those too are frustrating as sometimes the photos are not that good, or have them in strange poses that make it difficult to match the characteristics.

I used to be a fan of the drawings (Audubon et al), but there too you have an idealized view that is sometimes difficult to match. Add the fact feathers reflect light differently depending on the angle of incident light, and it’s even more challenging . . . but fun.

  2. Bird identification is not easy in any country… but the beak is normally a good indicator and one I use to aid me… your birds are so different from ours, but I’d bet on beak shape being similar, which would make this of the sparrow family I’d say anyway…
    But the photos are brilliant…
