Normally, before I take any photos, I custom white balance my camera to the setting that I am in. It can make a huge difference.
This morning, I could see that the sunrise was going to be a brilliant orange. I was at work and knew I would have to take the photos quickly. My white balance was still set for the indoor photos I took yesterday so in the first photos, the sky was blue and purple instead of the orange I was seeing.
I quickly white balanced the camera for where I was and the next photos showed the brilliant orange colors.
I just wish I could have been at a prettier location than the parking lot at my office.

As I shoot RAW, I generally leave the white balance on AUTO. Except when I shoot snow. It’s easier to set the proper WB in the camera, then to try and get it right after the fact.
I always shoot in RAW too and if I have to I can correct the white balance in Lightroom. But I like to try get it as close as possible to what I actually see. But sometimes I’m in a rush and I don’t think before I shoot.
I shoot too much and too varied, even when in one location, to mess with the WB.
Like I said . . . some places, some subjects. There are many where I wished I had, but I seem to recover OK from the Auto setting. It’s actually pretty good.
White balance I have to look into – don’t think I have that on my camera .. but I will check. Really like that purple sky.
It’s great to see a side by side of the difference WB can make. All the colors are beautiful.
Thank you, Wendy.
