After a day of snow yesterday, the sun came out today. It’s still cold, but a very pretty day. While visiting the park, some hardy gentlemen arrived with their kayaks in tow. The Deschutes River is a great place for whitewater rafting and kayaking, if you know what you’re doing. These guys obviously did. The water this time of year (or any time of year for that matter) is cold! cold! cold! They were dressed for both the cold air and the cold water. I haven’t done much action shooting so I didn’t know if these would turn out or not. I used a higher ISO (800) and a higher shutter speed (1/640). The water was running pretty fast in the area we were at. I took one photo of the water rushing around some bushes in the river.

I hit “like” but what I wanted to say was “they’re nuts”.
Than again we all have passions others might find strange.
As for the actions shots, I think they came out fine; you can clearly see the guy’s face, and he does not look overly crazy. They’re in the shadow, spot metering might have helped brighten them up a bit (don’t know what you used). For action shooting that seems a bit low for shutter speed, but can’t argue with success. Rule of thumb I use is at least 1.5x and preferably 2.5x the zoom value (i.e. 100mm zoom means 1/150 or 1/200 shutter speed), but for action shots I like to be in the 1/1000 and up range, especially when shooting something flailing about . . . like crazy people on a river in February.
I agree with you that they’re nuts. But whatever floats your boat, I guess. Thanks for the input on actions shots. There are a multitude of sporting events in this area throughout the year and I will have plenty of opportunities to practice. Thanks again.

Amazing … I can feel the wetness and the cold through you shots. The crispyness in the air. I love the sunlight on the bushes, looks like afternoon sun. The colors in that last shot are very playful.
