The Hummingbird and the Wasp

I didn’t realize there was a wasp in this photo until I downloaded it.  The hummingbird is keeping a close eye on the wasp – wasps and bees have been known to out-maneuver  hummingbirds and sting them, resulting in death.

  1. Looks like the air traffic controller slipped out to the bathroom for a second, causing a near collision in the skies over your garden, Maralee!

What a nice glimpse this image is into the perils of the daily life of a hummingbird.

    1. The problem with hummingbird feeders is that that sugar water also attracts wasps. I haven’t had too many this year – some years there are a lot. They’re usually pretty saavy and can avoid the wasps. I’ve never seen one die yet and I hope I don’t.
