After spending a few days in the Yosemite area, my sister and I decided to go to the coast for the last few days. We drove up scenic Highway 1 north of San Francisco. One of my all time favorite Alfred Hitchcock movies was “The Birds.” So since we were going through Bodega Bay, I had to stop and take a couple of photos.
The Bodega Bay we drove through doesn’t have much to remind me of the movie so we only stopped briefly.
The only birds we saw were a whole bunch of cormorants on an old dock and some seagulls, but I was able to say I saw birds in Bodega Bay.

I did the exact same thing back in Summer 1973. I had to go to Bodega Bay to see “the birds.” As an aside, when The Birds came out, I was very into birds. Sadly, mom and dad wouldn’t let me go see the movie. It was only a quarter! So I skipped school the next afternoon and went to the matinee, which was only a nickel! No wonder mom and dad wouldn’t let an 8-year-old boy go see it. I lost interest in birds for several years, not becoming a birder again until my freshman year in college.
I don’t think I ever saw it in the theater – only on television . . . a dozen times or so. I was always on the watch for birds massing after that. Funny thing now is that birds are one of my favorite creatures.
