I need help identifying this bird. I tried to Google it but was surprised at how many birds there are with yellow bellies, dark crown and dark wing. I thought maybe an American Goldfinch but I’m not sure. Anyone know?
Looks like a juvenile goldfinch. The lesser goldfinches are typically more greenish. It is so hard to differentiate between male, female, young, old, and anomalies. 🙂
I don’t know the kind, but it is a beautiful bird.
Thank you, Judy.
Great photo, I’m going to say this is a Lesser Goldfinch.
Based on the consensus it is either a Lesser Goldfinch, and American Goldfinch, or a juvenile Goldfinch. At least we all believe it is a Goldfinch. 🙂
For sure a Gold Finch of some kind 🙂 and it could well be a American Gold finch. Where was the picture taken?
Oh, along with the where it would help to know when it was taken 🙂
I believe that is a Goldfinch.
I think we all agree it is some type of Goldfinch. 🙂

Looks to me like a Goldfinch in the process of changing color.
Thanks. At least we know it’s some type of Goldfinch.
Great captures wish I could help, but our birds differ too much…
Thanks, Rob.
Canary?
I don’t think we have any canaries in the wild here. Most everyone thinks it is some type of Goldfinch.
Oh! If it’s not a canary, might it be a Siskin?
The National Audubon Society (Sibley Guide to Birds) narrows this little guy down to an adult Lesser Goldfinch. (Carduelis psaltria)
Thanks, Gunta. We all agree its some type of goldfinch.

I never knew birds were so hard to identify. It makes me much more appreciative of bird watchers.
