Posted on September 4, 2014November 7, 2014 by Tuxedo Sophisticated CatThistle and Fly that Looks Like a Bee My thistle plants are about 5′ tall right now and starting to go to seed. But a few are still flowering and the bees are still coming around. Fall is on its way . . . it was 34 degrees this morning. Brrrr. :-0. As you can tell, I don’t know my insects very well. What kind of fly is it that imitates the colors of a bee or wasp? Reply
It’s difficult to tell from the picture, but you can look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoverfly There are also a few European varieties (one gave me a heck of a time tracking it down).
I have never seen a fly that looked like a bee either. I thought something like that was a wasp. Nice pics. Reply
Beautiful, Maralee! 34 is a wee bit chilly for my blood, which will have to thicken up soon, right? Reply
Thanks. This is my favorite time of the year. The nights are quite cool but the days are still in the 70’s and 80’s. Love it!! Reply
These are stunning photos.
Nice photos, but the title is misleading as that is a fly.
