About ten years ago we got a single hen and chick plant from our daughter-in-law. We wanted a hardy perennial plant for an area of our property that we lovingly call the “lunar bin” because it looks like the moon – nothing but rocks and weeds. We cleared it out, divided into planting sections, and brought in some fill dirt. This single chick and hen has produced lots and lots of chicks. They are taking over the entire “lunar bin” which is fine with me.

Every spring, the chicks will flower for a short time. As I was walking through the area yesterday I noticed that the flowers are in the very beginning stages of forming.

Even when they aren’t flowering, they are an interesting plant. I’m glad we have them.

What a strange plant… and these images are just gorgeous. I really love the way you have captured these. Very striking.
They are a strange plant and very hardy. We live on the high desert and the area where they are growing doesn’t get much moisture, yet they are thriving and populating the who area. That’s fine with me because it adds some green and interest to a normally rocky, dry area.
Wow, Maralee! Some stunning images!
Thanks, so much. I can’t wait for them to actually bloom.
Beautifull effects
Thank you. I appreciate that.
This probably the best flower –plant photo of yours I seen so fare. Stunning – the top one I wouldn’t mind having blown up and proper framed. Will go perfectly in my bedroom. I’m truly stunned. Any of them will do. The top 3 will be perfect under my picture shelve. YOU’RE GOOooOOoOOOd!
Thanks, Viveka. I appreciate all your wonderful comments.
Will come and pick them up!!! Pleasure is mine.
Viveka – if you would like a print of one of the photos, I’d be happy to send you one. Email me at my email address: maralee808@mac.com.

Thanks will do that – going to my Zumba dancing now … a mad hour ahead.
You’ve really captured the essence of this plant. The photo is very intricate and brings it to life. Spectacular!
Thanks, Joyce. Hope all is well in D.C.
Nice compositions, especially the fourth photo.
Thanks. I’m hoping they will actually bloom in the next couple of weeks so I can take photos of the flowers. The flowers don’t last very long, but the green spiky spines stay green almost all the time.
Wow these are stunning! I especially love the first pic. Thanks for sharing.
Great patterns and movement. Almost interplanetary. These would be great blown up with a high quality print to frame.
Very nice! I really like number 2.
I didn’t know they flowered. Thanks.
They get little flowers for a short time in the spring. These are just getting ready to bloom.
interesting flowers. something intriguing about the first shot.
