We had a gorgeous moon set yesterday morning. I used my trusty The Photographer’s Ephemeris app to see exactly where the moon was going to set. It’s not a cheap app – I think it was $9.99 – but it will give you valuable information wherever you are in the world.
The camera does not always see what the eye sees and this was one of those cases. My eye could see the detail in the moon and the detail of the pond and trees. The camera didn’t – it either saw the moon and the background was pitch black, or it saw the background and the moon was a white light with no detail.
I had to combine two exposures for these photos – one I metered on the moon and the other on the background and then I combined them in Photoshop.

Gorgeous
Thanks, Mo. It seems that the moon lined up perfectly this month.
What magnificent photos…
Thank you, Rob.
Well worth the time and trouble (and skill) that it took.
Thank you. The hardest part was dealing with the cold. It was about 25 degrees F and my fingers were like popsicles when I got done.
WoOoOoOooOow! Maralee, you have really catched the moon now – fantastic shots, the last one – priceless .. with the clouds in the mountains. You have come a MEGA way. *smile
Fantastic job, even if Photoshop had some part in it. Just priceless, Maralee.
Thanks, Viveka. I was fortunate that it was a fairly clear morning with just a few whispy clouds outside. And the moon lined up right where I wanted it to be.
You have become a – moon girl too – I have been talking to the moon since I was 5 years old .. you are talking to it with your camera and it response very well to you. *smile
Beautiful, and great post-processing to give us your vision!
Thanks, Carissa.
Good job. 🙂
Thank you.
I like your process, I have trouble with night photography.
Its hard when there such a contrast with the light. I have to use my tripod for these shots because the exposure is so long.
Absolutely gorgeous!!!
Thank you, Carol Ann.
Our moon here has been incredible….almost a harvest moon…and we also had the rings or whatever they are around it.
I can’t believe the weather we’ve been having. Seems so much more like spring. It makes me fear for the fire season though. If we don’t get some significant moisture soon, the fire season may be a bad one this year.
BEAUTIFUL! WELL DONE!
BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!
Thank you, Francine.
Wow! Looks like it belongs in a storybook. Majestic! Glorious! All those things!
Thank you, Sarah.
SMH… Wonderful job Maralee.. Simply wonderful..
Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
