While at the grocery store today, I spotted some Protea flowers and I just had to pick them up.  I haven’t seen a Protea since I left Hawaii 13 years ago.  There are many different types of protea flowers – these are Red Pincushion Protea.

The Protea flower originated in South Africa.  Ancestors of the Protea plant date back to 100 million years ago and are considered one of the oldest family of plant on earth.  The flower is named after the Greek God, Proteus, who had the ability to change shape and form at his will.

I’m hoping I can find some of the different varieties of Protea as they are all different and unique.
