Day 76 – Orchids

I am a sucker for orchids.  I love the simple elegance of them.  Until last year, I had never tried growing them.  As I’ve stated previously, I do not have a green thumb.  Just about every plant I’ve ever owned has died.  I either over water it or under water it.  Or the cats eat it.

However, last year I was told by my co-worker that orchids aren’t that difficult to grow.  So I went out and bought one and once it had finished flowering I cut it back, repotted it, and lo and behold, it is now growing again and should be flowering soon.  The nice thing about them is the pots are small enough  to put on a shelf out of reach of the cats.

A local store here was having an orchid promo this week and they were gorgeous.  I ended up getting three plants with different colored orchids.  You can count on seeing more orchid photos in the future.

  1. Orchids, my favourite flower too … I water them every fourth night – really soak them … and let them stand so all excess water drips out from the pot. The one still blooming I bought in beginning of December. It’s more common that we over water them. If the roots still green inside the pot – don’t water. Have never re-potted, treat them rough and they love it. Love your shots. They are such a fantastic object to take photos of. Happy Paddy’s day!

  2. I can’t say I’m so good at “growing” them…but I like them because I can keep them alive for at least 4-6 wks. I did just try cutting one back a month ago, so we’ll see what happens. They are striking and oh so photogenic.

    1. Thanks. I didn’t think I could grow them either because I have never been able to grow anything. I always thought once the flowers fell off the plant was dead. But I cut it back. watered it occasionally, and about 8 months later another one started growing. I have another one that hasn’t started to grow and I don’t know if it will. All the leaves fell off too. I’ll wait a while and see.
