Day 72 – Bromeliad

I don’t have a green thumb.  I have attempted to grow indoor plants and either my cats shred them or I kill them.  But I love plants and keep trying to get them to grow for me.  (If anyone has any suggestions on how to keep cats from shredding plants, please let me know).

I have an orchid plant that I have put out of reach of the cats that has bloomed once, I cut it back as I was instructed to do, and I have another one growing.  It looks like I may have new blooms within the next month.  So maybe I’m not totally hopeless.

I recently bought a bromeliad just because I like the way it looks and it seems somewhat easy to grow.  I sprayed cat deterrent on the leaves but it didn’t deter them, so some of the leaves were shredded.  I decided I need to photograph it before it gets completely destroyed. (I don’t have a place high enough to fit the plant and keep the cats off of it).

  1. Try strapping a five pound weigh on them.

Seriously, I’ve had good luck keeping plants from attacking plants. Some were not prone to it, some got dissuaded by those grass trays you can buy (I made my own), and some needed convincing in the form of being sprayed with water.

You can also try to put something bitter on the leaves, or tin foil around the plant (does not look great, but mine did not like it much). Unfortunately, some cats will just see it as a challenge.

    1. Thanks for the suggestions. I think the weights will do the trick – it’ll keep them from jumping. I’ve put tin foil and a bitter spray on the leaves to no avail (it’s just one cat that’s doing this). I just put double stick tape around the area – I read they don’t like that on their paws. I’ll keep you posted.

  2. A beautiful plant and your photos are just as beautiful. I have no idea as far as your cats are concerned… my two cats leave my plants alone, unless the kitty litter needs changing, then they will dig in the plant pots.

  3. Beautiful … plant and shorts – it will go well with my grey and red sofa *smile
When you see your cats doing something they shouldn’t do indoors – just give them a light water shower from a water spray bottle. It worked on my “Zoda”, “Whiskey” moved in to me as an adult and he was so very well behaved.

  4. I’ll have to try the water method. My only problem is I’m at work from 7 a.m. til 5 p.m. everyday so as the saying goes, “when the cat’s away, the mice will play.” In this instance its when the humans are away, the cats will play.
